Veteran Astronaut unveils art celebrating 60 Years of women in space.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will host a momentous event on Thursday, August 17, 2023, beneath Kennedy Space Center's space shuttle Atlantis, beginning at 10 AM, as it welcomes esteemed veteran astronaut Karen Nyberg, Ph.D., who will unveil two captivating works of art to commemorate 60 years of women's contributions to space exploration. This artistic tribute marks a significant milestone in space travel history and honors the pioneering spirit of female astronauts.

The event is part of a series of celebrations held throughout the summer at the Visitor Complex, dedicated to recognizing and applauding the enduring impact of women on the space program.

Nyberg's artistic creations pay homage to two trailblazing women who etched their names in space history. The first artwork pays tribute to Valentina Tereshkova, the visionary cosmonaut who shattered barriers as the first woman to journey into space six decades ago. The second piece celebrates the remarkable achievements of Sally Ride, who, four decades ago, became the first American woman to venture beyond Earth's atmosphere. Both artworks are meticulously crafted textile collages composed of an array of intricately arranged fabric pieces, resulting in visually stunning and distinctive designs that capture the essence of these pioneering figures.

Dr. Karen Nyberg, a distinguished mechanical engineer and accomplished astronaut with a remarkable 30-year tenure at NASA, holds an esteemed place within the space exploration community, and her invaluable contributions include being a member of the NASA Astronaut Corps in 2000. In 2008, Nyberg embarked on her inaugural spaceflight aboard the space shuttle Discovery, coinciding with the zenith of the International Space Station's construction phase.

Notably, during her second spaceflight in 2013, Dr. Nyberg made history by becoming the first individual to sew and quilt while in the microgravity environment of space. Her unique talents in engineering and the arts exemplify the multidisciplinary expertise essential for the success of space missions.

The event is a reminder of the continued progress and advancements made in space exploration, with women playing an integral role in shaping the future of space travel.
